i think i lost a lot as a kid i think i think i i didn’t get to make a lot of0:05

decisions for myself and one thing that um that i learned from one of my therapists

0:12

so a few years ago was uh you’re in the driver’s seat now and so it’s the trust goes to you it

0:19

gets handed to you the keys are yours now and so do you trust yourself will you make

0:27

the decision to choose yourself and and um you know even when things are

0:32

challenging still do it because i think you know like uh even with fear

0:38

just like still do it because i think i think you owe it to yourself you owe

0:44

it to the child inside um to uh to win you can’t lose

0:51

you you shouldn’t let yourself lose what is going on everyone i’m your host kevin munoz you’re listening to the layout

2:08

[Music]

2:14

leo welcome to the podcast thank you for being here uh let’s just begin by having

2:19

us tell you having you tell us a little bit about your background how you got to be the

2:25

influencer and take that star that you are well known for today

2:31

well i started in um 2020 right uh kind of right in the height of

2:37

the pandemic i think um uh and i only made an account because i wanted to see more videos of people that

2:43

i thought were so funny on twitter so i made a i made a tic tac account to watch i didn’t make it to to be a

2:52

creator myself okay and um the talent spoke

3:00

no i i did a video and it just got traction and got some followers that night and then i

3:06

was like oh my gosh like i forgot i used to be funny maybe i could do some more stuff i

3:11

hadn’t been funny for a few years so i think i made i made a few videos and

3:17

then i just kept going and and you know a little a little bit later now i moved

3:22

uh back to california and and um i’m here and i feel so fortunate to

3:28

be doing this because it’s really fun i love it well i mean i’m glad i’m glad you’re having fun um and you say you

3:34

forgot to um you forgot that you’re funny is that because you know reading up on you and

3:40

just following you for a while now um you’ve always wanted to be uh you always wanted to do at least um

3:47

a comedy right you have you you always wanted to do comedy in um one form or another and then um

3:54

you kind of gave that a break and then through this uh through tic tac

3:59

you kind of found found that again yeah i wanted to do comedy early on and

4:05

then i um i think it just got really busy with life i had a lot of things to take care

4:10

of um and uh

4:16

a lot of things to deal with um that came up and so with with all that stuff

4:21

happening i was like i think i little by little i forgot that like i knew sweet fight like eighth

4:27

grade i was killing you like like killing it with with your peers or like the the teachers are like

4:35

everyone um mainly the peers i would have like um i would i used to do like a little

4:40

stand-up routine at recess and lunch catch me my residency

4:46

in front of the cafeteria i’m picturing you like standing up on a

4:51

table being like all right everyone it’s time is that how it went or like you just

4:58

started i was just i was right there on the regular on the ground

5:03

and uh didn’t want to draw too much attention it was more still really like if you happen to be there then you got

5:10

to you heard my show you heard my set you had the privilege [Laughter]

5:17

oh man i could see starting like a little side hustle like just selling the kids some tickets that’s what i’d be doing

5:23

[Music]

5:28

oh man well listen i think we all know a lot of people know you from um playing

5:33

different characters through your skits um you know but i want to i want to get into

5:39

uh if you’re okay with that too just who leo is um

5:45

behind all the characters that you play like what’s your favorite food and like what

5:52

makes you the happiest like is content crea creating like what does that makes you the happiest i feel like that’s

5:57

something that i don’t really see a side of from you so i would love to just you

6:02

know get get into that thank you no one ever asks me what my favorite food is and i always want to

6:09

say it well this is it i um i uh i’m a big fan of

6:16

of tamales big fan um i love soup

6:22

i’m such a soup i don’t care what like

6:29

and i have such a problem with like memes and those videos of people that that are like oh my mom’s making posole

6:36

and it’s a hundred and like 100 degrees i don’t care i can i’ll have pozzola in hell i don’t

6:42

care i don’t want i don’t care how hot it is i am always down for super ramen like

6:49

anything so no that’s funny that’s like when you mentioned that my mom be doing the same

6:55

thing right in like 100 degree weather and i was like mom why you make a call to their

7:00

test and i’m like as i’m like pouring it into myself why are you doing this yeah why are you doing this

7:08

just do fourth of july yeah exactly exactly

7:14

so i am i like that um what makes me really happy is not to be like

7:20

so basic but that’s i’m i feel really excited because like

7:27

what uh what i do as my job is what really makes me

7:32

so happy like i’ve always done this as a hobby it’s always been like

7:38

it’s been so exciting like i i i’ve been making videos for like

7:43

15 years um wow um i used to do youtube and

7:49

and vine and nothing ever happened but no no attraction ever came with that but i always loved it i was

7:56

well you know i i i started editing when i was like 11 i learned um i was trying

8:01

to make music videos of of people uh vlogs uh interviews you know and so last

8:09

night i showed a video with one of my friends here in my living room and

8:15

i remember just like once we finished up i was started editing i stayed up till 4am this morning editing wow and i was

8:22

like oh my gosh like like this is what i do like for work and it’s like i got to sit down with uh

8:29

one of my friends who i love and and just talk to him

8:35

and and you know we did a little um like a reflection video

8:41

and then just like talk to him and and that’s it like what i’ve always done for free what i’ve always done for

8:48

fun and so i don’t have a lot of hobbies other than that because it is a it was my hobby and

8:54

now i just feel so fortunate that’s like like the heck i get to do it

9:01

um but along with that like i love watching other people’s stuff other people’s projects and movies

9:08

um and any other people’s uh forms of art it’s so exciting to see you

9:14

know what what goes on in people’s minds i i really like my goal is to be friends with like musicians because musicians

9:20

are i think the coolest people around i just can’t even

9:25

which musician do you have in mind right now like to be friends with yeah

9:31

i would love to be friends with uh this musician i listen to a lot of danny ocean my favorite band mora

9:37

like camilo i i just want to be like i want to be on

9:42

text on good morning tech spaces like yo you up like

9:51

that video that you were talking about that you said you got um to sit down with one of your good friends right is

9:56

that the one with the rolling stones oh yeah yeah yeah yeah no i did i did

10:02

see that and uh i was gonna get into that later but you know one might as well dive into that right now that um

10:08

that you mentioned it you know how does it feel to to be on one of those like one of the biggest

10:16

if not the biggest right magazine for um what they’re calling it like class of

10:21

2022 um most like influential uh the people out there like how how was

10:28

that when you received the news that i i it’s really crazy i think it’s it’s

10:35

really one of those um that’s really uh pretty unbelievable for me and so it takes like a good

10:43

check in um to just like really try to process and and think about it because i think

10:49

sometimes you know we can get busy and and some things can feel like um

10:56

like another project or another task then you realize that oh my gosh like that’s that’s that magazine you know

11:03

it’s the same one that’s that’s been around and same one that featured people who who

11:11

you loved um growing up and so it’s a big um

11:17

it’s a big moment of just like

11:22

trying to understand it and yeah it’s cool and you

11:28

know and for me it’s really exciting because like having my friend in it is like crazy i’m

11:34

such a fan of him and and his story and and i’ve watched him

11:40

so much behind the scenes work and and negotiate

11:45

and and um and just uh have heard so much of his dialogue of

11:52

what he wants to accomplish and so seeing that for him is so exciting to be able to be in his

11:58

audience yeah absolutely and not to mention all the things that uh you’ve accomplished as well you know

12:05

i know that it was i don’t think things came this easy always right and i think just um

12:13

being a content creator in general just takes a lot of dedication and and time consuming

12:20

um and sometimes you have to make like sacrifices um you know to get where to

12:26

get as big as you want to like what are what are some like challenges that you’ve had to face

12:33

um in your journey to get you know from going to this this kid in

12:39

middle school who had like comedy shows in front of his friends

12:44

to being to being on the freaking rolling stones like how does what do you what’s the secret

12:55

i don’t know i i mean there’s a lot of uh i think what i feel like i’ve always been able

13:02

to um do you know like i said i have been doing

13:09

um i have a separate youtube account apart from my

13:15

my current one that i used this morning for for for a video published this morning

13:21

but my old one it has videos that go back you know 15 years and and

13:26

what i noticed about all of them um after talking to one of my friends uh

13:32

was uh she just said like you just never stopped making videos

13:38

even while um while there were things going on and i

13:44

don’t know why i never stopped i honestly don’t know why or how because i think there was a lot

13:51

of things that popped up along the way that were really challenging

13:57

um and i still i still

14:03

somehow managed to um write and produce something um

14:09

through that and and so uh yeah i think there’s just been

14:15

there’s been a lot of a lot of things along the way that you know that really

14:22

they had me they almost had me [Laughter] yeah but you didn’t let them you know

14:27

you didn’t let them i was very close

14:34

and uh yeah but but i don’t know i think the whole time i think i was really just

14:39

like fighting for it because i was like man i don’t i think i lost a lot as a kid i

14:46

think i think i i didn’t get to make a lot of decisions for myself and one thing that um

14:54

that i learned from one of my therapists a few years ago was uh you’re in the driver’s seat now

15:00

and so it’s the trust goes to you it gets handed to you the keys are yours now

15:05

and so do you trust yourself will you make

15:11

the decision to choose yourself and and um you know even when things are

15:16

challenging still do it because i think you know i got even with fear

15:22

just like still do it because i think i think you owe it to yourself you owe

15:28

it to the child inside um to uh to win you can’t lose

15:35

you you shouldn’t let yourself lose

15:40

yeah no that’s that’s absolutely beautiful i love that message and one that resonates with me a lot in

15:46

particular um and would too with the latino community i think that that’s the toughest thing that we

15:53

have um is kind of following our own dreams because a lot

15:59

of us um [Music] carry a lot on our shoulders when it comes to like our family right

16:07

so i don’t know it’s it’s i it’s always something i’ve had trouble with is balancing like pursuing

16:14

what i’m passionate about and and being tugged towards like my family

16:20

you know i feel like i feel like i’m being like i want to chase my dreams and then my family wants me to do this and it’s

16:27

just like how do you balance that um any like you know i guess that’s like

16:33

you said i think that’s perfectly summarizes that is uh you you just have to take the keys and and

16:40

you know put them in the ignition because you’re the driver and and and go for it right

16:47

yeah and and you know i wish there was um a one-size-fits-all answer because i

16:53

think that sometimes you know i can’t i can’t speak for everyone um and their experiences but i know that

17:01

sometimes we are able to leave and i and i know that sometimes we’re just not

17:07

um i i i was i was able to leave but like five years later than i wanted to

17:15

um that was one of the like a conversation that i had with one

17:20

of my um friends from back then who recently said like man i’m so

17:26

excited for you and like everything you’re doing imagine if you would have if you would have done it earlier

17:33

imagine because i’m 27 now and he’s like imagine if you would have started earlier

17:39

and and i just have to disagree man i didn’t bet i

17:44

wanted to start a lot earlier but i was not logistically able to leave a lot

17:50

earlier i was able to leave right on time and it was it was a very tight

17:55

frame that was a very tight um time frame

18:01

and and so it’s it’s really scary um and then i know you know it’s not easy

18:07

for everyone because i i i knew the whole time that the the

18:15

things were happening that i was like man i think there’s more i think there’s

18:20

crazy more to life than this um but and i believe it i see it on tv and

18:27

i see it through people’s stories who i who i listened to and and then watched and

18:33

read about but i also knew that it just wasn’t my time yet to leave um

18:40

and but yeah it’s so it’s a lot um but i think that you do know

18:47

i think you know when it’s response when you when it’s a responsible choice and you’re not running away that was my

18:52

thing i wanted to run away but i needed to make sure that my bases were covered and i wasn’t

18:57

running from my problems and and now i feel um

19:04

i don’t feel convicted i don’t feel guilt because i know that like when i when i finally decided that i

19:11

wanted to try to choose myself i still made a decision to choose others

19:17

uh in the background before i got to choose myself don’t go anywhere we’ll be right back

19:23

19:53

notes now let’s get back to today’s episode yeah i know absolutely and how do you

20:00

like you know one of the toughest things i’ve also had is like explaining

20:05

how you make money from content creating to like parents um and just family like

20:12

other family members as well um how did

20:17

why was that for you explaining it like to your parents that like listen like i’m gonna take this

20:23

this leap and and believing in myself um because i think this this is like what i

20:28

know i’m destined for um and a lot of latino parents

20:35

see as higher education as being like the the pinnacle of you know american dream

20:42

success um they don’t really see [Music] how much money you can make online and

20:50

all the opportunities on on social media as well and of course it’s not easy but it’s it’s certainly

20:56

there right was that something that you also had to communicate um for me i mean

21:02

yeah totally like i think like i think one one thing that i talked off

21:07

camera with my friend yesterday was that i think one of the reasons that it’s hard for them

21:14

is i my assumption i guess my

21:19

take on it is i think it’s also hard for them to understand that like

21:25

it’s a little irritating that like we came over to this country

21:31

speaking for them we came over to this country and it’s been so hard for us to make money and then you’re telling us

21:37

that you can make this amount for doing

21:42

nothing essentially mentioning a product they’re like yeah so

21:48

um i feel like there’s there’s a lot of layers to it i think that there you know there’s frustration and i

21:55

think there’s also fear because i think when you know that you know for my dad who still works in

22:00

the fields in hanford um for him it’s like i

22:07

he knows that if there’s rain and if there’s water and sun there’s gonna

22:13

probably be fruit to pick and pack and

22:19

and for us i mean i can’t make a promise of because social media is still

22:24

unpredictable for me right so it is hard to like put that trust in that and so

22:30

um for me though i i don’t i i didn’t really have to make that um

22:36

and i didn’t have to make that uh i have that sort of dialogue with my parents because

22:42

my dad actually just like two weeks ago found out what i do oh really

22:48

yeah he we were in i went to go visit him because he’s in california right now um

22:55

uh and visit him and got together with my mom and took them to dinner and went shopping a

23:02

little bit and you know with some people coming up for

23:07

um to meet and and chad took the picture i think that’s when he finally

23:13

was trying to figure out what was what was going on because i never really told him

23:18

um and he doesn’t do you know social media or anything he’s very um very busy with uh he lives in mexico

23:27

he has his wife and children over there so um that’s not something i ever had to

23:32

explain to him and for my mom um

23:38

you know i just kind of let her know this is what’s going on and i think she trusts me um and

23:44

what i’m doing because i i typically i’m not a super trusting person

23:51

and so um i feel like i um if i’m doing it i think that she trusts that i know

23:57

what i’m doing because i wouldn’t just put my faith in anything yeah

24:03

and you know at the end of the day it’s like you’re you’re doing it um you know all the opportunities that

24:10

have come from like you know tick tock uh that has elevated you through and

24:17

opened a lot of doors for you it ultimately cycles back to like you know

24:22

your parents right like i think that’s something too that they might not see and it’s sometimes

24:29

hard to understand um but you know that’s it’s it’s beautiful that

24:34

you you communicate that with them and and they know that too i want to switch gears a little bit

24:39

about what it means for you to be a con like a latino content creator in

24:46

this space where as i mentioned earlier in the conversation you know it’s it’s

24:51

there’s not that many and now there’s there’s you’re seeing a little bit more um latinos taking that that leap of

24:58

faith and getting into like youtube and tick tock and you know instagram and and

25:04

and being influencers but there’s still not that many of us and you’re you’re someone that i look up to

25:10

as um that you know your journey is is one that

25:17

i can resonate with and all the things that you’ve accomplished despite everything that you’ve been through um

25:24

i i really admire that so you know what what does that mean to represent like a

25:30

latino community in your space yeah it’s um

25:36

it’s a big responsibility for me because i think that they

25:41

you know i grew up really um

25:48

aware of of my um

25:54

of of my culture of being brown and

26:00

and seeing what that meant um on capitol hill um growing up and watching the news

26:07

i watched the news for fun as a child and i’ve always watched news as like

26:14

more than i’ve watched any other show or movie and so what i always

26:20

felt was that i understood the

26:26

racism and and these preconceived ideas that people had

26:32

and i never wanted to be another person that

26:39

made life hard for people you know watching the news i felt so

26:45

insecure when i would watch um someone with the last name gonzalez get

26:51

arrested or you know on tv and it shows that they’re wanted and it says gonzalez or

26:58

garcia yeah and i was like

27:04

yes yes that’s uh here’s something else going on

27:09

yeah so feeling super insecure with that and so i grew up

27:14

really stressing out about that goes i don’t want to be another gonzalez

27:20

on that side maybe i’ll be a gonzalez on the anchor side or something um

27:27

and and so i always wanted to be

27:32

intentional about just trying to be good

27:37

um because i i i watched people you know growing up who i just thought

27:44

were so cool um and so positive um on tv and i thought like i there was

27:52

not a lot of people that looked like me i mean other than watching george lopez

27:59

which he he was someone that inspired me because of his story and and

28:04

i just thought he was so funny but apart from him there wasn’t a lot of

28:09

there wasn’t a lot of people on tv and and i never watched youtube growing up

28:15

when i was a kid i never really watched much youtube like

28:21

really i don’t even i really don’t remember watching anybody

28:26

um and so uh i think now that i’m here i i have met

28:33

a lot of people um including george lopez right [Laughter]

28:41

i’ve met a lot of people in the last two years who say that they watch me and i’m like

28:47

that’s crazy that’s wild i i’m so i’m glad and i’m

28:52

i’m i’m glad that um you know people can watch me and feel

28:58

safe i got a message last week from someone who just uh dm me and said thank you for not

29:04

swearing in your instagram and tick tocks because my family and i my kids can watch you

29:10

with me and that’s wow that’s so nice for me because even if the kids don’t get the humor i’d

29:16

like for the parents to be able to watch me in front of them and so yeah i just want to represent um well

29:23

try to be a decent uh person um

29:28

and then you know i wanted to say gonzalez on the bottom of the screen but not not wanted

29:37

different was um you know not cursing that stuff like family friendly content was that

29:43

always your your aim like was that on purpose

29:48

oh just kind of like developed it’s just like that’s that’s what my content is and it just happens

29:54

to be family friendly oh i think uh i i had never i had never

30:00

cussed before i met this uh other creator named chewy

30:06

and then i collab with him very early on on tick-tock and he shouldn’t have collabed with me

30:12

because i was very very small he’s very massive and and

30:18

and i had like two brand deals at the time they were not brand deals they were like

30:24

you know here’s some money on cash up some yeah talk about this or whatever and

30:30

anyways one thing that he said he’s like just don’t ever cuss and just like don’t know because like

30:35

it’s not worth it like just be just be brand friendly um

30:40

and i wasn’t really cussing before that but then after that i was like all right like i can try to be funny without

30:46

cussing i do i do swear um i’m off camera on elsewhere like in podcasts and stuff but

30:53

not when it’s my own thing was like it’s like i don’t care

31:01

well i mean that’s the whole thing you know especially with like podcasts and stuff it’s just like hey that’s you’re you’re here to be you what you can do

31:09

the other side of um that most people don’t get to see right i will say though when i might stand up

31:15

uh i haven’t done that but i’m writing saying that i said you do stand up

31:21

swearing and not yeah so i think for that i’m like i’m trying to go down

31:26

like the uh like bob saget type like very clean on tv and this and then when it comes to

31:34

the stage yeah so you can are you you planning to um like you said you’re writing stand up

31:42

are you gonna be like touring and stuff in the future is that kind of with you right now because i would you know i would love to

31:48

see you i’m in jersey coming to new jersey yeah so come to new york or like philly i’m there

31:55

yeah oh i’m down yeah i i don’t have any plans right now but i am writing and so

32:00

i that’s one of my that’s one of the things that i didn’t want to do for sure because a lot of people

32:06

a lot of people assumed that i do stand up because they they dm me about it and i’m like i guess i should it’s fun i

32:14

want to get back to my eighth grade days when i had a residency exactly um what messages would you have for

32:21

um the latino community and others you know seeing

32:26

this and listening um when it comes to just following their own path

32:33

um and you know you’re someone that a lot of people look up to so what messages would you like to

32:40

say to us i you know i think that you

32:46

you should do what you feel um

32:52

makes you feel like the most alive um i never wanted to uh

32:58

have any regrets i just always felt like you know i might as well try it and if it doesn’t work then that’s fine who am

33:05

i the world or people or

33:12

god doesn’t owe me anything so if it doesn’t work then i’m fine but like if it works that’s gonna be so

33:20

crazy what if what if it works and so and so i um

33:26

i i think that if you feel alive doing something then you should press into that lock eyes with that

33:32

because you have you have that right um in your one life on earth though the

33:39

only time you get you might as well spend it trying to do that thing that you love

33:45

that because i don’t know i feel like you know we all had like these dreams in

33:50

first fourth grade whatever and then um sometimes we get busy and

33:56

sometimes you know we don’t always want to still do that but if you still do

34:01

then just try it because i think um i think the reward

34:08

is um is such a tropical peaceful

34:13

feeling yeah absolutely um and one thing too it’s like you you

34:20

mentioned little um leo on the rolling stones um and i wanted to

34:26

see how what you thought like thinking of little leo do you think he would be proud

34:32

um of where you are where you’re at today would he ever have imagined that

34:39

you’d be where you’re at today um

34:46

i i i think uh i think so i think i think you could imagine

34:52

because i think he dreamed so much um and so yeah i uh

34:58

i think he’d be just jumping in excitement that like that that like you did that

35:06

you know and and and so i i think sometimes i have i feel like i um

35:13

i have a little leona it’s really just him not me in the room and i’m just like this is uh

35:18

this is george lopez and look this is their best this is this is the set this is

35:26

the studio this is where this one so um yeah that’s that’s my

35:34

that’s the only judge that i really am just trying to impress because um

35:40

i mean i think he’s super easily impressed but um but it’s so fun to impress uh

35:46

yeah you gotta get one of those like pop figures of yourself get it gotta get that in the works

35:51

come on brendan what are you doing [Laughter] right and um you know finally i want to

35:58

finish off um with a question that i like to ask at the end of podcast and

36:04

just um start asking people as well it’s just like finally like what do you attribute your success to

36:12

like do you think a certain percentage of it comes from uh

36:17

luck is it all luck uh determination like what what do you

36:23

think um well i think

36:29

um i think the reason that i haven’t

36:35

stopped i think what i attribute stuff to is uh

36:40

or things my life is i had a lot of community growing up

36:47

um and and i was really fortunate that like really

36:52

um loving teachers and school staff and

36:58

and and so i think because of that i’ve tried to be intentional about that life i got my

37:05

bike stolen in sixth grade and then the office people

37:10

uh all pitched in to buy me a new bike so now i

37:16

i can’t live my life as if a group of people didn’t one time buy me a bike you know like that’s

37:23

i feel like because of that i’ve tried to be very um decent

37:29

um because i can’t can’t pretend that wouldn’t happen um

37:35

and uh and i think because of of that i i

37:40

i i i try to be someone that um disarms people

37:47

and um then i want you to feel really comfortable and safe and

37:54

um you know and i’ve i’ve prayed a lot about stuff that’s

38:01

happening and i’ve i’ve you know i haven’t really stopped working like i had mentioned uh through

38:08

other things that were happening and um and yeah i think a lot of that also just

38:15

goes back to the little child just um trying to

38:22

to have a cool show and tell i think all those things all together

38:28

um sets things up uh really nicely

38:34

that’s that’s beautiful i mean you mentioned like the the little child it’s just like out i just picture like

38:40

little [Music] like little leo just like pushing you right just to keep going like just

38:45

behind you all the time like you know keep going like we got it we gotta we gotta go to the next level like i

38:51

wanna go bigger and like go do these amazing things um

38:57

and i’ve never thought about it that way but i can i can fully feel that that’s what has been

39:04

happening this whole time right like when you need that little push you just just remember the leo just pushing you

39:10

behind you right like um which speaking of of going beyond and

39:16

dreaming um what’s uh what’s next for you what do you what are you is there anything that

39:22

you’re working on that you want to share um or anything that you’d like to promote whatever this is

39:28

you know i wanna i wanna know what you’re working on and what you are gonna what are your plans for the

39:34

future as well like what can we look forward to yeah i i have a lot of dreams um nothing

39:40

that i’m working on at this moment yeah um nothing in you know production but

39:45

there are things that are in pre-pre-pre-pre production i gotcha yeah

39:51

yeah i tend to work the seeds planted right so a lot of writing um

39:57

and um yeah so i think there’s some some

40:02

fun stuff ahead uh but you have to wait and see

40:08

all right all right yeah yeah but yeah um just a lot of still working on tick

40:14

tocks every day instagram every day yeah i see you i’m a fan i see you all the time

40:21

but yeah no thank you again um for coming on here and then sharing a lot of uh us you know a lot about

40:28

yourself aside that that i haven’t seen much of and i wanted to

40:33

um see more of and i’m glad that you’re
